Offers a museum on the first floor that rotates exhibits and showcases the history of Johnston County from the early 1700s when the county was inhabited by Tuscarora Indians, through colonial times and the Civil War, all the while telling stories of the people of the county.

Also known as one of the best equipped facilities in the country for studying local history and genealogy, the Center has a variety of public records, private manuscripts, photographs, family histories, old newspapers, and artifacts are assembled in commodious quarters to allow scholars, amateur historians, and genealogists alike to study the history and culture of Johnston County and its people.

Visitors to the Heritage Center may pick up the Downtown Smithfield Walking Tour brochure to tour historic homes and walk along the Neuse River Walk.
