Outfitters and guides play a critical role in the tourism industry and have a profound impact on visitors’ experience in the state. Guides and outfitters are in a unique position to be leaders in protecting our natural spaces through demonstrating best-in-class stewardship practices and educating and inspiring visitors to do the same. By participating in the Outdoor NC Guide program, they will become a trusted partner leading to more recognition and promotion on a statewide level.

The Leave No Trace and the Outdoor NC team conduct a specialized 2-day, Level 1 Leave No Trace Guide-Focused Course. This 16-hour course with a select group of guides from across North Carolina not only provides guides with an in-depth overview of the skills associated with Leave No Trace but also prepares guides to teach the Outdoor NC Leave No Trace Guide Workshop.

Overview of the Outdoor NC Leave No Trace principles, practices and ethics includes the how's and why’s behind the Outdoor NC Leave No Trace practices that help minimize our impacts to land, soil, vegetation, water, wildlife, cultural resources and other people.

The course includes hands-on skill demonstrations, effective communication skills and techniques and one session led by each participant demonstrating how they would use these skills in interactions with their customers. Upon completion participants will receive a Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor certification and be prepared to share these critical skills with staff and other guides and outfitters across the state.
