Established in 1961, Uwharrie National Forest spans approximately 51,850 acres across Montgomery, Randolph and Davidson counties. The forest encompasses the ancient Uwharrie Mountains, some of the oldest mountains in North America, characterized by rolling hills and diverse ecosystems.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore more than 100 miles of trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The Uwharrie National Recreation Trail, stretching approximately 20 miles, is particularly popular among hikers seeking a moderately challenging trek through varied terrain. For off-road vehicle aficionados, the forest provides designated OHV trails that cater to both beginners and seasoned riders. Wildlife watchers may encounter white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and a variety of bird species, making the forest a haven for nature observation.
Camping is available at several sites, including the Arrowhead and Canebrake Horse campgrounds, which provide amenities for both tent and RV campers. Or choose from primitive sites for true solitude or established campgrounds with easy trail access, and always pack for changing weather in this untamed stretch of North Carolina.
