Point of Interest
Nantahala National Forest
90 Sloan Road, Franklin, NC 28734
Spanning more than 500,000 acres of rugged mountains, cool river gorges and hardwood forests, Nantahala National Forest is North Carolina’s largest national forest and one of its most varied. Elevations range from 1,200 feet to 5,800 feet, creating a patchwork of ecosystems and outdoor experiences, from shaded coves to panoramic overlooks.
“Nantahala” is a Cherokee word meaning “land of the noon day sun,” a fitting name for the Nantahala Gorge, where the sun only reaches to the valley floor at midday. Adventurers can hike to striking waterfalls, discover quiet fishing spots or cool off at various swimming holes scattered throughout the forest. Whether you’re paddling, picnicking or chasing waterfalls, Nantahala offers a rare and richly rewarding kind of wild.
