Moses H. Cone Memorial Park
Enthusiasts will tell you winter hikes have distinct advantages over summer hikes because the views are wide open and trails are peacefully uncrowded. Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, has miles of walkable trails, while the loop trail around Price Lake is a favorite. The historic Flat Top Manor, perched atop the estate, adds to the park’s timeless charm and serves as a retail shop for Southern Highland Craft Guild, which features handmade crafts by hundreds of regional artists.
The Blowing Rock
Blowing Rock’s namesake, this legendary rock formation is an immense rock outcropping 3,000 feet above the Johns River Gorge said to be where a heartbroken Cherokee maiden’s prayers were answered when the wind carried her lost love back to her. The unique cliffside shape creates an upward wind current, sometimes causing snow to appear as if it’s falling upward. Enjoy the views and make sure to take advantage of the unique photo-op, but don’t get too close to the edge, as it is unlikely The Blowing Rock will do you the same favor.
Downtown Blowing Rock
Walk around this quintessential mountain town and check out the quaint shops, galleries, bars and cafés lining the streets. Take a break and warm up with a visit to the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum with its multiple galleries dedicated to the visual arts, history and heritage of the region. And beware the scent of chocolate that will lure you into Kilwin’s with its array of tempting sweets.
Bistro Roca
Dining in the evening is a cozy way to end the day. Storie Street Grille is located on Main Street, while tucked away on a quiet side street is long-time local favorite Bistro Roca. Once a speakeasy, Bistro Roca is home to North Carolina's longest continually serving bar.
Chetola Resort
If your passion is fishing, winter is an ideal season to stalk wily mountain trout. The crowds are gone, leaving you with solitude, spectacular scenery, and brook, brown and rainbow trout. There are guide services around the High Country offering outings, while Chetola Resort has its own trophy waters and fishing packages. If a relaxing visit to the spa could help you recover from a strenuous day of skiing, hiking, fishing or shopping, the spa at Chetola Resort has a full menu of services as well as fitness classes and personal training programs.
Downtown Boone
The town of Boone, named after Daniel and home to Appalachian State University, has a nostalgic feel with its King Street lined with restaurants, cafés, shops and boutiques. The restored post office is a classic, and a statue of iconic mountain musician Doc Watson picking his guitar graces a downtown bench. The university’s buildings provide a modern backdrop, including the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts with its permanent collections and rotating exhibitions. Boone is also home to two High Country brewing favorites, Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Lost Province Brewing Company.
Mast General Store
Ease back in time at the original Mast General Store, a historic gem that has been serving the High Country since 1883. During winter, warm up by the potbellied stove while browsing barrels of old-fashioned candy, locally made goods, and outdoor gear perfect for snowy adventures. The store’s cozy, nostalgic charm makes it a must-visit stop, where you can sip on a complimentary cup of coffee and soak in the mountain-town magic. Don’t forget to pick up a unique souvenir or a hearty winter treat before you head back out into the fresh mountain air.
Grandfather Vineyard & Winery

Sample and sip in the cozy tasting room or bundle up on the heated patio to enjoy breathtaking views of snow-dusted vineyards. The crisp air pairs perfectly with a glass of their selection of bold reds or signature Chardonnay. Unwind by the fire pit with a locally sourced charcuterie board and soak in the peaceful winter ambiance of this charming, family-owned winery.

Just minutes from Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain and the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster, it’s the perfect après-ski stop for a fireside meal at one of its inviting restaurants.
Banner Elk Winery & Villa
Sip award-winning wines by the warmth of a crackling fire in the rustic tasting room, or stroll the vineyard’s frost-kissed landscape with a glass of their award-winning Marechal Foch. For a truly relaxing escape, stay overnight at The Overlook Lodge, where mountain views and luxurious accommodations create the perfect winter getaway. Whether you're unwinding after a day on the slopes or simply savoring a peaceful moment, this winery is a must-visit in the High Country
