Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
81 Carl Sandburg Lane, Flat Rock, NC 28731
Among the rolling hills of Flat Rock, the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site preserves the legacy of one of America’s most celebrated poets and biographers. Known as “the poet of the people,” Sandburg spent the final two decades of his life at Connemara, a quiet hillside home where he wrote, reflected and roamed the 264-acre property’s wooded trails and pastures.
Visitors can tour the historic home filled with original furnishings and step inside Sandburg’s study, where thousands of books still line the walls. Beyond the home, you'll find 5 miles of hiking trails, a small lake and the working goat farm once run by Sandburg’s wife, Lilian. Children can meet descendants of her champion dairy goats, a beloved highlight for families and school groups alike.
Whether you're here for literary history, mountain air or a peaceful walk in the poet’s footsteps, the Carl Sandburg Home is a place where reflection meets discovery.
