A black water river, the Lumber River gets its inky coloring from the natural tannin from the many cypress gum trees along its banks. It is one of only four North Carolina rivers to be federally designated a National Wild and Scenic River and the only black-water river in the state which has received this designation.

Boaters and paddlers will enjoy the water. But do careful planning due to fluctuating water levels and hazards. Fishing, short hikes and interpretive ranger programs make for a great experience in a scenic park.

Picnicking facilities, boat ramp, primitive camping and bathroom facilities are also available.

An official site on the NC Birding Trail.
