The conservancy includes many diverse and rare species, such as the Venus flytrap (a vulnerable species on the conservation list), and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. The Green Swamp also contains some of the country’s finest examples of longleaf pine savannas and magnificent orchids and at least 14 different insectivorous plants, including sundew and pitcher plants. Almost 13,000 acres of the preserve, however, are comprised of pocosin, a dense evergreen shrub bog, dominated by gallberry, titi, and sweetbay. The preserve is home to many rare animals, including American alligator, fox squirrel, Henslow’s sparrow, Bachman’s sparrow, and Hessel’s hairstreak butterfly.
