The Yanceyville Museum of Art houses the largest collection of artist Maud Gatewood’s work. Admirers will find a wide variety of her paintings that span her lifetime. Maud was a powerful force in the North Carolina art community. As a painter, teacher, activist and staunch individualist, she delighted viewers, inspired students, supported organizations and served as a role model on how to participate in a world of ideas and images. Maud was equally adept at landscape and architectural subjects both with and without figures. Like many artists, she drew routinely in a variety of media recording thoughts for new paintings and drawings for its own sake. She never focused on one style, preferring instead to experiment with materials and approaches. Other notable local artists' work may be seen here too including that of Yancey Smith and Russel Watlington.
