At the Greensboro Visitors Center, you’ll find friendly faces, maps, brochures, schedules for upcoming events and directions to anywhere you’d like to go. Our representatives will answer your questions about our city and region. The Visitors Center is located right next to the Greensboro Coliseum Complex at 2411 W. Gate City Blvd.

On our cover and throughout Greensboro, “Jeansboro” is a public art project of painted jeans sculptures that celebrates Greensboro’s rich history with the denim and textile industry. Since its initial downtown launch in 2015, Jeansboro statues have multiplied and can be found throughout the city.

Greensboro was a leader in textiles as early as 1828 when Henry Humphreys built North Carolina’s first steam-powered cotton mill. In 1895, Moses and Ceasar Cone selected Greensboro for their Southern Finishing and Warehouse Co., forerunner of Cone Mills. By 1920, Blue Bell was a successful maker of bib overalls. In 1935, attracted by the city’s railroad and airport, Burlington Industries moved its headquarters to Greensboro. Guilford Mills began operations in 1946.

1800s

1600-EARLY 1700S Saura and Keyauwee Indians called North Carolina’s Piedmont region home in the 1600s and early 1700s. Germans, African-Americans, Quakers of Welsh and English descent, and Scotch-Irish from the northern colonies began to move here around 1740. These pioneers worked the land and shaped the future for generations to come.

1807 - GREENSBORO WAS NAMED The residents of the area voted to create a new, more centrally located seat of government. The following year, elected officials mapped out a 42-acre tract of land, paid $98 to purchase it, and suggested that it be named “Greensborough” in honor of Major Gen. Greene.

1767- THE QUAKERS’ EDUCATIONAL ROOTS Presbyterian minister David Caldwell and his wife, Rachel, had started a local school that prepared young men to study at the university level. By 1837, Quakers in the New Garden community had formed a boarding school for training teachers. Known today as Guilford College, it was the first coeducational institution in the South. 1781 - REVOLUTIONARY WAR BATTLE In an effort to thwart the invasion of North Carolina by 1,900 redcoats under Lord Cornwallis, American Major Gen. Nathanael Greene deployed 4,400 rebels at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. Cornwallis held the field after an intense fight, but he lost a quarter of his army, which hastened his defeat at Yorktown seven months later.

1830 - UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HUB From 1830 until the end of the Civil War, Quaker anti-slave advocate Vestal Coffin was prominent in the movement of slaves from Greensboro. From 1830 until the end of the Civil War, Vestal and his cousin Levi took part in an informal network known as the Underground Railroad, providing shelter and assistance to hundreds of slaves seeking freedom. Levi later relocated to Ohio, where he was known as “President of the Underground Railroad.” Greensboro’s Guilford College campus was a known hiding place for slaves seeking freedom. 1856 - RAILROAD ACCESS The railroad was a key factor in Greensboro’s prosperity and industrial growth. John Motley Morehead, a North Carolina governor and former student of David Caldwell, campaigned for two decades to have Greensboro included as a stop on the North Carolina Railroad. Finally, in 1856, a special EastWest line of tracks was completed. 1865 - SEAT OF CONFEDERACY DURING CIVIL WAR Greensboro was both a storehouse and a railroad center for the Confederacy in the civil war, a vital source of supplies and troops for Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Greensboro became the seat of the Confederacy on April 11, 1865, as Confederate President Jefferson Davis arrived here after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox to discuss the military situation of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and the weakened Army of Tennessee. Later, all Confederate forces in North Carolina were mustered out and paroled in Greensboro.

EARLY 1900S- HISTORIC PALMER MEMORIAL INSTITUTE Dr. Charlotte Hawkins founded a preparatory school for African Americans called the Palmer Memorial Institute. Located just east of Greensboro, the school operated until 1971, when integration and adequate high schools lessened the appeal of a separate black school. The school now is the site of the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum at Historic Palmer Memorial Institute, the first state historic site honoring an African American woman.

2008- GOING GREEN Proximity Hotel and its restaurant Print Works Bistro are the first hotel and restaurant to be awarded Platium LEED Certification in the United States. As the first “green” hotel and restaurant, they are committed to sustainable practices and use 34.2% less energy and 35.5% less water than comparable hotels and restaurants.

1944- WORLD WAR II Greensboro was again a military center during World War II when railroads brought thousands of soldiers here for army training. In 1944, the training facility became the Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD) for the Army Air Corps in the Eastern United States. 1960- GREENSBORO’S SIT IN One of the most significant civil rights protests in American history began with the birth of the nation’s sit-in movement at the segregated lunch counter in Greensboro’s downtown F.W. Woolworth store on Feb. 1, 1960. On that day, four North Carolina A&T State University freshmen sat down at the counter and asked for service, an act of courage that ignited a spark that fueled protests across the country, ultimately breaking down barriers across the South.

2011- GREENSBORO MURALS Art has taken over the outer walls in Greensboro. With work from Greensboro Mural Project that provides resources for murals around the city. Koury owned Pig Pounder and Red Cinemas also provide canvas to the arts. Local artists have contributed to the scene with murals like “Mac Miller” (2018) by Jeks behind the Forge Greensboro and “Girl” by Doub (2016) that is downtown. 2015- GREENSBORO SCIENCE CENTER GETS ‘TANKED’ Animal Planet TV Show ‘Tanked’ made a custom 10,000 gallon tank for the Wiseman Aqaurium’s Octopus. This custom-built tank is on display featuring an active and growing octopus.

Summer

Can’t wait until July Fourth to see fireworks? Catch a Greensboro Grasshoppers game and watch the firework finale every Friday and Saturday night. And, of course, nothing says “summer” like ice cream and hot dogs. Be sure to stop by for a scoop or two of homemade ice cream and an old-fashioned hotdog at Yum Yum Better Ice Cream and Hot Dogs, a family business operating in Greensboro since 1906.

Fall

As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, there is no better time to “fall” in love with Greensboro than in autumn. Pardon the pun. Kick off the season at the North Carolina Folk Festival, a free, three-day celebration of art, culture, and heritage. Sample regional wines at the Taste Carolina Wine Festival or the Red, White & Blues Festival. Take the whole family on a seasonal adventure at J. Razz and Tazz Farm for hayrides, corn mazes, and, of course, finding the perfect pumpkin in their pumpkin patch. Looking for some Halloween fun? Brave the Woods of Terror and replace any nightmares with sweet dreams by grabbing a slice of pumpkin cheesecake at Cheesecakes by Alex afterward. Wander along the elevated wooden boardwalk through 7 acres of natural wetlands at the Bog Garden and enjoy the stunning fall colors of the changing leaves.

Spring

Spring is one of the best times to be in the center of it all. Temperatures begin to rise and flowers bloom into bouquets of natural beauty, decorating the beautiful parks and gardens of Greensboro. Take in the colorful views at the Greensboro Arboretum to warm up for all the spring activities in the city. Catch a case of “March Madness” with the Women’s ACC Basketball Tournament and the NCAA Regionals Basketball Tournaments. Swap out your basketball for some jigging shoes and join Greensboro in welcoming The World Irish Dancing Championships for its third time in the United States ever! Take some time to unwind by hopping aboard the Brew Peddlers’ trolley to see what’s brewing downtown this April for NC Beer Month. End spring on a musical note at the Carolina Blues Festival, the longest-running blues festival in the Southeast.

Winter

The air may be cold, but winter is a season to create warm memories and reflect on the important events of the past. Uncover stories from the Revolutionary War to modern times at the Greensboro History Museum. Celebrate Black History Month by taking a tour of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum and learn how four courageous African-American freshmen from North Carolina A&T State University ignited the sit-in movement across the country in 1960. Afterward, visit the February One Monument on NC A&T campus to honor the bravery of the Greensboro Four. Come November, the winter holiday season offers a bounty of festive activities. Visit the Blandwood Mansion to learn about mid-nineteenth century holiday traditions and take in the local and period greenery decorating the mansion as if prepared for a grand Christmas ball.
