Pioneer Theater
109 Budleigh St., Manteo, NC 27954
Established in 1918, Manteo's Pioneer Theater is a cherished landmark that has entertained generations with its rich cinematic and cultural offerings. One of the oldest family-owned movie theaters in the country, the Pioneer Theater is believed to be haunted by a former projectionist. Patrons have reported cold drafts, electrical anomalies and the sound of footsteps in the projection room, making this historic cinema a spooky spot for film enthusiasts.
In May 2023, after a brief closure, the theater reopened under new ownership following extensive renovations that restored its original art deco charm. The updated venue now features a redesigned entrance, a new marquee reminiscent of its 1930s design and modernized interior spaces, including a versatile auditorium equipped for movies, live performances and private events. The Pioneer Theater’s commitment to preserving the nostalgic theater experience while embracing modern amenities makes it a must-visit destination for both locals and visitors to the Outer Banks.
