Plan a Romantic Trip to the North Carolina Mountains

Lakeview at Fontana, a boutique inn and spa, offers a romantic escape with “treetop soaking cabanas”

Whether you’re newly in love or rekindling your romance, a getaway to the North Carolina mountains will make your hearts sing. And the Great Smoky Mountains region of our state is your destination.

Bryson City is your home base, named one of the “20 Best Small Towns to Visit” by Smithsonian magazine. It offers much to discover – explore downtown or venture out into the mountains.

Your lodging options are far from ordinary. Choose from an abundance of mountain cabin rentals or stay at a boutique hotel such as The Everett Hotel. Then there's Lakeview at Fontana, which became a star on many couples’ wish lists when it installed “treetop soaking cabanas” – Southern Living says the inn is “One of the great lodging secrets…” Or book a stay at nearby Fontana Village Resort and you may decide to never venture far from the amenity-filled accommodations.

If you two enjoy outdoor adventure, there are several portions of the Appalachian Trail that cross into the Bryson City and Swain County areas, including some that are perfect for a day hike. You can also hike or drive to waterfalls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and near the town of Cherokee. Spend a day in this town to see the legendary Unto These Hills outdoor drama and try your luck at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino.

Because romance is on the menu, book a couple’s massage at one of the local spas, order sweets for your sweet at The Heavenly Fudge Depot, then enjoy dinner and wine at Great Smoky Mountains Winery. Plus, spend an afternoon on the “shine and dine” tour on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, serving two North Carolina staples – moonshine and barbecue – with the train departing from (and returning to) the Bryson City Depot.

There’s much to see and do in North Carolina, so read on.
