The founder of the School, Dr. Shaw was the founding Pastor of the Timothy Darling Presbyterian Church in Oxford. Mary Potter Academy was an outgrowth of the Church.

Until 1936, Mary Potter was the only high school for African Americans in Granville County and it served as a Boarding School until the 1950’s. In 1970, following its seventy-first Annual Commencement, Mary Potter became an integrated middle School. Its talented instructors from Lincoln, Howard, Syracuse and Shaw Universities prepared students in normal and preparatory courses.

Visitors can expect to see 17th and 18th century Victorian and Queen Anne furniture, Photos of the original 20 acre school campus, class yearbooks dating back to 1948 with famous and recognizable past students, and Memorabilia from National Reunions.
