Formally called Slater Industrial Academy, the university was constructed between 1918 - 1925 and, as Winston-Salem Teacher’s College, was the first black institution in the nation to grant degrees for teaching in the elementary grades. Today the university is a thriving institution that makes significant contributions to the arts and sciences.Athletic facilities include the C.E. Gaines Center, which houses a natatorium and a 3000-seat basketball/gynmastics facility.
