The NC Musicians Mural trail is the vision of artist Scott Nurkin who wanted the create large-scale murals in the hometowns of NC musicians such as John Coltrane, Earl Scruggs, Nina Simone & many more. The project reaches communities small and large, rural and urban, in every part of North Carolina. In May 2023, Nurkin unveiled the Link Wray Mural in Dunn.
Link Wray was born May 2, 1929 in Dunn. He's credited with being one of the first Native American Rock Stars (as seen in the Netflix documentary Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World), inventing the power cord & being Godfather of the Rockabilly movement. Link's sound and hit song "Rumble" influenced artist such as The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, & Bob Dylan. In 2018 his song "Rumble" was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and in 2023 Link Wray was inducted in to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
