A paradise for both birds and birders, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge provides numerous recreation opportunities to hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. People enjoy viewing the unique geology and diverse wildlife; the refuge is especially noted for birding opportunities.

Drop by the Visitor Center to view displays on local wildlife. Then try out one of the scopes trained on North Pond to view various species of birds found there seasonally. There are two short, universally accessible wildlife trails on Pea Island.

Between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe, Visitor Center 4 miles south of Inlet. 6,000-acre refuge, haven for 365+ bird species. Observation platforms, parking. Bird walks, summer adult, children’s programs; bird walks spring, summer, fall. Life-Saving Station kiosk, parking area south of Visitor Center. Guided canoe tours are available for a fee.
