One of the oldest and most beautiful theatres in America, THCPA has been in nearly continuous use since it opened in 1858. Forming the east wing of Wilmington's magnificent City Hall, the complex houses three performance venues, the Main Stage, the Grand Ballroom, and the Studio Theater. The theatre boasts beautiful architectural detail, including the ornate proscenium arch, sweeping balconies, original mahogany wooden benches in the gallery level, and a "thunder run", an original sound mechanism, the only one of its kind in the United States. The theatre is still a cultural center for Wilmington. Last year, there were more than 250 shows, events and films totaling 495 performances and attracting audiences of more than 85,000 with events ranging from music to ballet and theatre, from pop, jazz, folk and country music to the finest in domestic, independent, and foreign films.
