"The richest gold mining property east of the Mississippi.” Gold was first discovered here in 1824. Located in eastern Rowan County, it was once a thriving, rough and rowdy mining town rivaling Charlotte in size and wealth. Visit Gold Hill Mines Historic Park and the Restored Mining Village of Gold Hill. The 70 acre park offers picnic areas, playground and rental facilities for formal and informal functions and is open daily until dark. The shops in the village offer visitors a nostalgic step back in time to a working nineteenth century mining town.
No admission charge. Tours are available.
