Visitors to the c. 1852 main building can tour elegantly furnished period rooms; a hands-on parlor and furnished historic hotel rooms on the third floor. Changing exhibits explore art, history and historic preservation. North Carolina’s largest public collection of horse-drawn vehicles is located in the Daniel Stowe Carriage House at the south of the museum grounds.

The museum is located on the Dallas Court Square and is part of a National Register of Historic Places District. It's accredited by the American Association of Museums. Works of art, books, locally produced crafts, and historic reproductions are for sale at the Museum Gift Store. The museum is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
