The historic Dismal Swamp Canal is a 22-mile, hand dug canal completed in 1805. It is the oldest man-made waterway having sustained continuous operations. Today, it is an alternate route on the Intracoastal Waterway. Maintained at a controlling depth of 6 ft, locks raise and lower boats into the canal to travel between North Carolina’s Albermarle Sound to Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay. Nearly 2,000 recreational boats travel through these dark mirrored waters yearly to enjoy the beauty of the mysterious Dismal Swamp.
