    Belmont,   NC   28012

On the National Register of Historic Places, Belmont Abbey boasts several sites at its 700-acre campus. Founded in 1876 by Benedictine monks, Belmont Abbey has blossomed into a place of religious pilgrimage, particularly to its Church of Maryhelp -- a minor basilica that was built in 1892 -- and its Lourdes Grotto (1891), blessed as a Pilgrimage Shrine. Belmont Abbey also hosts the oldest liberal arts college in the southeast U.S., Belmont Abbey College, a cemetery dating to 1890 and an academic library with an extensive rare-books collection including monastatic and Benedictine volumes.
