Ayr Mount (c. 1815) is a hidden gem off the Old Indian Trading Path. Plantation home to merchant William Kirkland of Ayr, Scotland. Considered one of the finest Federal-era residential structures in the Piedmont region. Meticulously restored to its original splendor by Richard H. Jenrette in 1985, it was then donated to Classical American Homes Preservation Trust in 1993 Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours at $12 per person highlight area history, family stories, the extraordinary architecture and surrounding landscapes. Interiors include many original Kirkland objects as well as museum-quality furniture and decorative arts by Duncan Phyfe and other notables from the period. The property consists of 60 acres including a mile-long trail called "Poet's Walk." Site gates for grounds and Poet’s Walk open 9 am daily, while closing times vary throughout year.
