After a major restoration, the 1872 Bodie Island Lighthouse is ready for visitors who want to climb the 214 steps that spiral to the top. The 170-foot structure is one of only a dozen remaining tall, brick tower lighthouses in the United States — and one of the few with an original first-order Fresnel lens to cast its light. Part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the lighthouse is open for climbs from the third Friday in April through Columbus Day (early October). The restored Double Keeper’s Quarters contains lighthouse exhibits and a bookshop.
Season is third Friday of April - Columbus Day in October. Tour tickets may be purchased on site on the day of the tour or may be reserved in advance.
