The largest of North Carolina's four National Forests, the Nantahala encompasses 531,148 acres with elevations ranging from 1,200 feet to 5,800 feet. The Forest is divided into three Districts, Cheoah in Robbinsville, Nantahala in Franklin and Tusquitee in Murphy.

Cable Cove Recreation Area, Cheoah Point Recreation Area, Horse Cove Campground, Tsali Recreation Area are camping areas in the Cheoah Ranger District. Cabins at Cheoah Point and Swan Cabin.

Cullasaja Gorge, Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, Standing Indian Campground, Van Hook Glade Campground offer camping within the Nantahala Ranger District. Cabins at Balsam Lake Lodge.

Hanging Dog Recreation Area and Jackrabbit Mountain Recreation Area are both in the Tusquitee Ranger District.
