Hendersonville’s downtown bears have emerged from hibernation. The Bearfootin’ Public Art Walk showcases 20 fiberglass bears painted by local artists. The bears are placed in an art walk formation in the middle of May and stay on display until the middle of October, when they’re auctioned for charity.
The fiberglass bears bring out the artists’ creativity. Sometimes they incorporate Blue Ridge Mountain scenes and landmarks. Other times it’s elements of nature, such as flowers, forests, butterflies and birds. Other bears take on humanlike characteristics, wearing clothes, hats or costumes.
The bears are synonymous with the town. Visitors enjoy roaming the wide sidewalks to find each one, pick their favorites and take selfies. Brochures with a complete listing of bears, artists, nonprofit beneficiaries and bear locations are available at the Visitor Center.
