Since 1931, locals have gathered in the community of (the fictional) Eli Whitney, N.C., for Uncle Eli's Quilting Party. The informal exhibition of quilts develops spontaneously as people come through the door with quilts old and new to offer for brief display. Some are finely worked; some are plain Janes. Meanwhile, the quilters pull up a chair and pull out their current projects to work on while sharing tips and encouragement. A covered-dish is served around 1, and shortly afterward, the attendees gather up their work and head home for another year.
