Paddle on the Dismal Swamp Canal, adjacent to the Great Dismal Swamp, charted by George Washington's survey company in 1763. Paddlers push off into the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail and navigate their own canoes or kayaks from South Mills, NC, to Chesapeake, VA, along the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, joining other paddlers for a picnic lunch.
Paddlers begin gathering as early as 7 a.m. and launch at 8:30 a.m. from the Dismal Swamp State Park in South Mills, N.C. After paddling the 7.5 miles, participants gather for a picnic lunch at the Dismal Swamp boat ramp on Ballahack Road.
The flow of kayakers is steady throughout the morning. Law enforcement and public safety officials from North Carolina and Virginia are on site during the event—both on the water and observing from the shore—to assist with any emergency situations that may arise.
