Located adjacent to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the Sullenberger Aviation Museum — formerly known as the Carolinas Aviation Museum — offers visitors an immersive journey into the world of aviation. Established in 1992 by aviation enthusiasts Floyd and Lois Wilson, the museum reopened on June 1, 2024, after extensive renovations and rebranding to honor Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, famed for the "Miracle on the Hudson" emergency landing on Jan. 15, 2009.
The museum's centerpiece is the meticulously preserved Airbus A320 from US Airways Flight 1549, providing an up-close encounter with the aircraft that captivated the world. Beyond this iconic exhibit, the 35,000-square-foot facility houses over 30 aircraft and more than 100 historical artifacts, including uniforms, letters and instruments that chronicle the rich tapestry of aviation history.
Interactive exhibits such as flight simulators engage visitors of all ages, fostering a hands-on understanding of the principles of flight and the innovations propelling the aerospace industry forward. As a Smithsonian Affiliate, the museum is dedicated to inspiring and educating future generations about the impact of aviation on society.
