Meet Dalton

Hello! I’m Dalton Kilby, a marketing professional who’s lived in North Carolina his whole life and knows the state like a local — because I am one. From growing up at the foot of the Brushy Mountains to studying at Appalachian State and settling into life in Sugar Mountain, I’ve spent decades hiking trails, chasing mountain light with my camera, and discovering the best spots to ski, eat and unwind. If it’s outside and a little off the beaten path, especially if it’s at higher elevations, chances are my family and I have tracked it down.

Sugar Mountain Resort

  • Skiing: This is obviously one of my favorite things to do during the winter. It’s the largest ski resort in NC and offers something from beginners to seasoned riders.
  • SugarFest: Every December, this event sets the tone for winter with gear demos, live music, fireworks and a weekend full of mountain energy. It reminds you why the mountains are the best place to be this time of year. And since we live so close to the resort, it's nice to join for live music each weekend after getting some laps in.
  • Puerto Nuevo: After a day on the slopes, this is my go-to spot. It’s casual, lively and the view from the dining room looks straight toward the resort. The al pastor tacos and guacamole are my favorites.

Shopping, sipping & snacking

  • Those Were the Days Antique Mall: One of my favorite hidden gems, right near the village entrance. The name makes you think it’s an antique furniture store, and while they have that, the real treasure is in the rooms with new and used vinyl records. I’ve been collecting for years and love finding everything from old NC bluegrass albums to new releases.
  • Mast General Store and Footsloggers are more great stops for supporting local businesses.
  • Mountain Grounds Coffee: This is how I start my mornings. The seasonal lattes are always worth trying, and the lunch options are quick and delicious. It has a warm, creative feel with custom mural artwork and cozy seating.
  • Reid’s Cafe: When it’s time for date night, we go here. The team knows how to make you feel welcome, and the cocktail program is one of the best in the High Country. The handmade pasta is always a must-order.

Local traditions

  • Tubing at Sugar Mountain Resort: This has become a Valentine’s Day tradition for me and my wife, Sarah. The Magic Carpet makes it convenient to go for as many rides as we want.
  • Hiking Beacon Heights Trail: It’s an easy trail that’s perfect for families. The views are incredible year-round, and it’s a great way to enjoy the peace and beauty of a High Country sunrise. We've made a tradition of hiking that trail after our family opens presents on Christmas morning.
