Shangri-La Stone Village
11535 NC 86, Prospect Hill, NC 27314
Settled in Prospect Hill off Highway 86 lies Shangri-La, a storybook village unlike any other. Here, stone buildings, meticulously handcrafted from local quarry finds, stand at a whimsical 5 feet tall. This enchanting miniature world is the sole creation of retired tobacco farmer Henry Warren, who embarked on his remarkable endeavor in 1968 at the age of 72. Over time, Warren single-handedly erected 27 unique structures, including a school, church, theater, hospital and mill. In 1972, he enshrined his philosophy with a plaque: "Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." Welcoming visitors anytime free of charge, Warren's Shangri-La remains a testament to one man's vision and a delightful discovery for all who stumble upon its stone-built charm.
