Sans Souci Ferry
2298 Woodard Road, Windsor, NC 27983
In Bertie County, just southeast of Windsor, the Sans Souci Ferry offers travelers a ride through history and across the Cashie River. One of only three remaining cable ferries in North Carolina, this unique crossing has been in operation since the 1930s under the NC Department of Transportation, though ferry service at this very spot dates back to the early 1800s.
Today, the ferry still runs free of charge and can carry up to two vehicles per trip and the crossing takes about five minutes. If you arrive and the ferry is on the opposite bank, just tap your car horn, a time-honored signal that brings the ferry operator your way.
A boat launch and parking area are also located at the site for paddlers and anglers wanting to explore the Cashie’s calm, winding waters. The ferry does pause for high water or severe weather, so it’s wise to check ahead before planning your crossing.
