If you're looking for a quieter side of the NC High Country, point your GPS just north of Wilkesboro toward Rendezvous Mountain State Park. This under-the-radar escape blends easy forest walks and picnic-ready quiet, with educational displays and mountaintop views of Pilot Mountain and Stone Mountain on clear days. Rendezvous is also a haven for bird-watchers, with 11 species of warblers calling it home. Follow the Talking Tree Trail for a self-guided look at native flora, or venture farther on the Amadahy Waterfalls Trail for a longer trek through the forest.
