Plummer Hook & Ladder Museum
115 N. Front St., Warrenton, NC 27589
The Plummer Hook & Ladder Museum in Warrenton tells the powerful story of courage, community and legacy. Founded by newly freed Black residents in the mid-1800s and officially chartered in 1868, the Plummer Hook & Ladder Company was not only the first African American fire department in North Carolina, it was the first fire department of any kind in Warren County. Under the leadership of John S. Plummer, the company grew in size and recognition, eventually helping to establish the North Carolina Colored Volunteer Firemen’s Association.
Today, the museum preserves this history and honors the bravery, selflessness and dedication of its founders. On display are rare artifacts including a 1938 Ford fire truck, a 19th-century hose reel, original fire buckets, historic documents and photographs.
More than a collection of objects, this space is a tribute to service, resilience and the extraordinary legacy of those who stepped forward to protect their neighbors.
