Ocracoke's Guiding Light
For 200 years, the Ocracoke Lighthouse beacon has shown across this remote island and the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean with a bright light visible from 14 miles out at sea. Unlike many lighthouses, its light is fixed rather than rotating, providing a constant guide for sailors navigating the ever-shifting shoals.
A Beacon of Simplicity
While the lighthouse’s 86 steps are not open for climbing, visitors can explore the surrounding grounds and capture photographs of this historic beacon. The site is easily accessible by bike or on foot from Ocracoke Village.
Don't underestimate the appeal of this hand-built historic gem. Consider visiting during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy the serene ambience of the island. Easily make a day of it and explore the nearby village, full of local shops, eateries and a vibrant arts scene.
