Designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1976, the New River drifts through some of the prettiest mountain scenery in North Carolina — and New River State Park is your launch point to explore it. Paddle gentle stretches with your own kayak or canoe or book a trip with a local outfitter, then round out the day with fishing, picnicking, wildlife watching and riverside camping. Start at the US 221 Access for the visitor center and exhibits, or head to Wagoner Access for tent and paddle-in options.
