Sanctuary Vineyards in Jarvisburg is a distinctive Outer Banks winery set among coastal farmland just inland from the barrier islands. The vineyard is notable for successfully growing vinifera grapes, which is rare in coastal environments with Albariño being one of its most recognized varietals.
The property offers a scenic vineyard setting along with a tasting room and guided tours that shuttle visitors through the vines and production areas. Linney’s Water Mill in Union Grove is a historic, water-powered gristmill that has operated for generations in Iredell County. Widely regarded as one of the last remaining working water-powered mills in the state, it offers visitors a glimpse into traditional milling methods and rural agricultural heritage.
Set along a small stream with a classic mill structure and waterwheel, the site combines historic character with a working mill and retail shop. Visitors can purchase freshly ground grits, cornmeal, and other products made on site, making it both a scenic and culturally significant stop in the region.

The towering rock formations and forested foothills create a striking landscape that is especially appealing for wide scenic photography. With its combination of recreation and natural beauty, the area provides opportunities to capture both the scale of the cliffs and the variety of outdoor activities that take place there.

These areas are ideal for photographers seeking authentic wildlife shots of bears in the wild, including the possibility of observing sows with cubs in spring and early summer (following den emergence).
Photography Priorities:
Black bears in natural habitat (feeding, roaming, interacting).
Juveniles alongside adult bears in spring/early summer (cub sightings most likely after emergence from dens).
Landscape context of wetlands, pocosins, forest edges to give a sense of place.
Show and keep a safe distance between photographer, other visitors and wildlife.
Early morning and late evening are peak activity periods; midday heat may reduce visible movement.
Suggested Locations:
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge
Core area for black bear sightings; locally considered the best spot in Eastern NC for bear photography with a high likelihood of seeing multiple bears.
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
Large refuge with extensive habitat and a well-known wildlife drive; offers interpretive tours and potential guided programs.
Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge
Broad wetlands with black bear presence; integrates landscape and wildlife photography opportunities.
Access Mandatories:
Public access is available at each refuge; follow posted regulations and wildlife viewing guidelines.
Use long lenses and maintain distance; do not approach bears or cubs.
Always follow refuge rules, keep food secured, and never feed or try to interact with wild bears.
A quirky oddities museum in historic downtown Wilmington featuring an eclectic collection of unusual artifacts and curiosities, from shrunken heads and bizarre specimens to movie props and rare objects. It’s housed in a 19th-century brick building near the riverfront.
