Hunt for Hidden Gems

Here in North Carolina, the NC Hidden Gems GeoTour gives you the chance to explore like a local, stumble upon hidden gems you'd otherwise miss and collect stories you can't get from a guidebook.

A geocache (or "cache" for short) is a small, hidden container tucked away in a real-world location — anywhere from a city park to a mountain trail to a lamppost downtown. Using GPS coordinates from the Geocaching app, players navigate to the cache's general area, then rely on clues, creativity and careful observation to spot it.

A geocache, or "cache," can look like almost anything — that's part of the fun. It might be a tiny container, like a film canister or magnetic key holder, just big enough to hold a small paper log. It could be a small box, often holding a logbook and even a few trade items, little trinkets you can swap or take if you leave something behind. Many caches may be cleverly disguised or hidden in plain sight by being made to look like everyday objects. Since caches range from nearly invisible to cleverly stashed, part of the adventure is learning to see the world a little differently — because that "rock" you just walked past might not be what it seems!

Once you've made the find, here's the usual geocaching etiquette: 

1. Sign the logbook. Every cache contains a log (paper or digital) where you write your name, username or code to prove you found it. This is the classic "proof of discovery." 
2. Trade fairly (if there are trade items). Some caches include small trinkets. If you take one, it's tradition to leave something of equal or greater value in return. Put it back exactly as you found it.
3. Reseal the container, and hide it back in the same spot — this keeps the adventure alive for the next person.
4. Log your find online. Open the Geocaching app and mark the cache as "Found," and feel free to leave a comment about your experience for other players.
5. Leave no trace. Be mindful of the environment, avoid damaging plants or property while searching, and make sure you haven't drawn attention from bystanders (this is called "geocaching stealth"). Part of the game is keeping hides secret for future finders.
