Moores Creek National Battlefield
40 Patriots Hall Drive, Currie, NC 28435
Moores Creek National Battlefield, located just outside Wilmington, marks the site of one of the first battles in the South during the American Revolution — and the first significant Patriot victory of the war. On Feb. 27, 1776, North Carolina Patriots halted a Loyalist advance at a strategic bridge crossing, shifting momentum in favor of independence across the colonies.
Today, visitors can walk in the footsteps of both Patriot and Loyalist forces along a preserved section of the 1776 colonial road. Highlights include the historic bridge site, reconstructed earthworks and a visitors center featuring exhibits, lighted maps and a short film that brings the battle to life.
The park’s 88 acres also showcase the region’s ecological diversity, from dry pine forests to a wet-pine savanna. Birdwatchers will appreciate its inclusion on the North Carolina Birding Trail, where sightings range from woodpeckers to warblers. Whether you're drawn by military history, natural beauty or a bit of both, this peaceful setting reveals a defining moment in North Carolinian and American history.
