The Town Of Banner Elk
The town of Banner Elk is nestled between the South's two largest ski slopes: Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain. Home of Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk is known for destination dining and a wide variety of independently owned shops that offer visitors shopping choices that cannot be found at chain stores or in malls.Banner Elk is a four-season vacation destination that is famous for its annual Woolly Worm races. Always held on the third weekend in October, the Woolly Worm Festival pits caterpillar against caterpillar as the brown-and-black-stripped worms race for the honor of being the one worm to make the official winter forecast.
