Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge
The refuge contains North Carolinas largest natural lake, Lake Mattamuskeet, its prominent feature. Measuring 7 miles wide, 18 miles long, and 2 to 3 feet deep, its certainly majestic. The refuge is a haven for endangered species such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons and American alligators. It is the winter destination of choice for many migratory birds, ducks, Canada geese, snow geese and thousands of tundra swans. The lake is home to largemouth bass, herring, sunfish, white perch and blue crabs, and is ideal for fishing, crabbing and canoeing.
