About 15 miles north of Highway 421, this welcoming community is a National Historic District and has much to offer visitors ranging from the arts and antiques, to unique crafts and one-of-a-kind specialty stores, fine restaurants and unique lodging choices. Since the town was incorporated in 1915, West Jefferson has continued to experience growth while preserving small town values and traditions. Many original store fronts still remain, thereby preserving a piece of history for future generations to enjoy. The Ashe County Cheese Factory and Church of the Fresco's are a must for tour buses and visitors on that day trip, but those that stay a while longer are in for a treat with all that Downtown West Jefferson has to offer. The Ashe County Farmers Market, located in downtown West Jefferson, samples crops and crafts grown and produced solely in Ashe County while helping sustain local farming and giving customers a unique experience. After seeing West Jefferson's caring and compassionate sense of community, many visitors decide not to leave. During the summer season, local artists host a Gallery Crawl that spans the entire town, giving out-of-town visitors and locals alike a chance to see West Jefferson's cultural scene. Twice a month in the Summer, downtown is the host to the Backstreet Summer Concert Series. Local heritage music is featured free every third and fourth Friday evenings from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Throughout the year, visitors also come to West Jefferson for the Christmas in July Festival and "On The Same Page" Literary Festival. In addition to our festivals, West Jefferson capitalizes on our natural beauty. Within walking distance from downtown, be sure to visit the Bowie-Seagraves Park while you are visiting. Special Directions: From Charlotte/Statesville/Elkin (I-77 Corridor) - Exit Interstate 77 onto US Hwy 421 North towards Wilkesboro/Boone, NC. Follow US Hwy 421 North approximately 44 miles from Interstate 77. At Deep Gap, NC (just past the Blue Ridge Parkway overpass at the top of the mountain) turn right onto US Hwy 221 North towards West Jefferson and follow for approximately 12 miles until you reach the stoplight. At the stoplight, turn left onto US Hwy 221 Business and follow for approximately 1.5 miles which takes you into downtown West Jefferson. From Raleigh/Greensboro/Winston-Salem - Follow Interstate 40 West. Exit onto US Hwy 421 North towards Yadkinville/North Wilkesboro. Continue to follow US Hwy 421 North for approximately 64 miles towards Boone. At Deep Gap, NC (just past the Blue Ridge Parkway overpass at the top of the mountain) turn right onto US Hwy 221 North towards West Jefferson and follow for approximately 12 miles until you reach the stoplight. At the stoplight, turn left onto US Hwy 221 Business and follow for approximately 1.5 miles which takes you into downtown West Jefferson. From Johnson City, TN area/Interstate 26- Follow US Hwy 321 South approximately 35-40 miles towards Boone, NC. From Boone, NC, take US Hwy 421 South approximately 10-12 miles towards Wilkesboro, NC. In Deep Gap, NC, Turn left onto US Hwy 221 North towards West Jefferson and follow for approximately 12 miles until you reach the stoplight. At the stoplight, turn left onto US Hwy 221 Business and follow for approximately 1.5 miles which takes you into downtown West Jefferson.
