The Sandhills Gamelands is a large nature reserve located in the northeastern sector of Richmond County. Its 60,000-acre preserve is known as one of the best examples of the long-leaf pine habitat in the United States. It is home to numerous species from reptiles to birds and mammals. Hiking, biking, fishing, camping and hunting (in season only) are allowed. The area is bisected by public roads. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the headquarters located on the west side of U.S. Hwy 1 just south of Hoffman for viewing advice.

Scotland Lane Entrance: From Hoffman (intersection of US1/SR 1475), drive south for two miles on US 1. Turn left on Old Lauren Hill Road (SR 1346), cross the railroad tracks and drive another 1.5 miles. Horse Creek Entrance: From the town of Pinebluff, NC, drive south on US 1 for two miles to the intersection of Thunder Road/Addor Road (SR 1102). Turn right on Thunder Road until the road intersects with the game land boundary.
