Description

The Yancey House Restaurant and Gallery is a finalist in the Best Dish in North Carolina 2009 contest sponsored by NC Dept. of Agricultural and Our State Magazine. The restaurant, once the residence (c.1807) of early 19th century Congressman Bartlett Yancey, offers dining in an historic, relaxing and inviting atmosphere. Featuring dishes with a Southern "awareness", Chef Lucindy Willis, Ph.D. adjusts the menu seasonally, working closely w/local farmers and growing her own vegetables and herbs to provide only the freshest produce available. Inspiration for the dishes comes from the owners' Texas and Louisiana roots, the local farming community and from the slow food movement, an eco-gastronomic movement that celebrates the slow life with food. We are from Louisiana, home of Chef Lucindy, so we are accustomed to some of the best food on the planet, plus we have also traveled all over the world. We were visiting friends in Greensboro who suggested the short drive to Caswell County for a gastronomic sensation, we were not disappointed. First, the service, lead by Miss Ashley, was terrific and professional. Our only complaint was that they did not have liquor by the drink, but our friends tell us that has been remedied recently by the wise voters of Caswell County. The ingredients were so fresh and local it reminded us of some of our wonderful culinary experiences in Italy, specifically Tullio's in Roma and La Giostra in Firenze where the trucks arrive daily from the fields. We visited extensively with Chef Lucindy and learned that she forages the countryside and gathers the freshest local herbs, seafood, cheeses, fruits and veggies available for the season. Being from Louisiana, I love crabs but ours don't hold a candle to the North Carolina blues. Chef Lucindy drives to area mongers each week, makes her selections and does not load the crab cakes up with breading and other fillers. OUTSTANDING! The best I've ever eaten! Her fried oysters made our Gulf oysters blush and the chicken isabella and sea bass were awesome! We will come back on our next visit to lovely North Carolina. This is NOT ordinary in your average eatery! If you want fast, cheap, processed, chemically polluted food, this is not the place for you. If you want reasonably priced, delicious, creative, fresh food, this is the place. A great dining experience in an historic old home, and now they have cocktails to go with a delightful wine selection. I hear that Yancey House was voted the Best Casual Restaurant in North Carolina last year and I understand why!
