Forbidding as its name may be, the Great Dismal Swamp is one of the few natural American gems remaining in the East. The swamp shelters a wealth of history and lore, flora and fauna. The Visitor's Center introduces guests to its inhabitants and history. 17 miles of old logging trails provide exploring opportunities for the hiker or mountain biker. A half-mile boardwalk provides a modern passage into the mysterious swamp, home to black bear, subtropical birds, butterflies and bobcats. Located on the historic Dismal Swamp Canal, canoes and kayaks have a perfect location to explore. Bike, canoe and kayak rentals available.
