The Palmetto-Peartree Preserve encompasses 10,000 acres along Albemarle Sound. Established in 1999 to protect the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, the preserve is a premier destination for hikers, birdwatchers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Come walk our boardwalk trails through wetland forests or hit the water for a paddle excursion on the Sound. The preserve is open to the public 7 days/week during daylight hours. No admission fee (advanced reservations and fee are required for camping platform use).
