The oldest structure, and the reason for the museum’s location, is the Hezekiah Alexander House, a 5,000- square foot rock house. The Hezekiah Alexander House is the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was built circa 1774 and still stands on its original site. The house is accompanied by a reproduction log kitchen, barn, and reconstructed two-story springhouse.
The 36,000-sq. ft. museum building has an intensive exhibits program which produced three galleries taking the Charlotte/Mecklenburg story from 18th to the 20th century. A changing exhibit space is on the second floor. Guided tours of the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite are at 1:15pm and 3:15pm Thursday through Sunday. Tours limited to 20 people. Please register at the desk when you arrive at the museum, as the tours are first come, first serve. Venue rentals and guided tours are available every day by appointment.
The average visit to the museum and Homesite lasts three to four hours. Plan for one to two hours inside the museum, and at least an hour for the Homesite tour.
