Description

The Blowing Rock is an immense cliff 4000 feet above sea level, over-hanging Johns River Gorge 3000 feet below. The phenomenon is so called because the rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the northwest wind seeps with such force that it returns light objects cast over the void. The current of air flowing upward from the Rock prompted the Ripley's "Believe-It-Or-Not" cartoon about "the only place in the world where snow falls upside down." Enjoy the scenic views and observation tower, gardens, small garden waterfall and unique gift shop.

This place is out of this world beautfull anyone who loves small town life and the outdoors would be a fool not to visit. Its downtown town so cute and and cozy u sit at the part and never wanna leave. Very nice shops and restaurant we ate at the Outback wich was very good next to the Holiday Inn Express. The hotel was nice brand new but I wish we could have stayed at the many private owned bed and breakfast in downtown they were so nice very well set up and I think it would have really set the mood but we made resavation and could not change. The Blowing Rock part was also great some of the best views we have seen here and the staff was very friendly. Plus we were close enough to tons of other stuff most towns feel like u stepped back in time. Grandfather Mountain, Linville, Boone and though many don't know about it we found out talking to a local, go to Elk Park town it's about 10 or 15 min from grandfather mnts, but worth every second. Its back off winding rds and seems like ur lost but once u get to the bottom of the dirt rd and walk up u have Elk River Falls, crystal clear water and very clean paths but steep and jus a short distance down about 15 yrd u come up on a amazing water fall. and dont forget ur bathing suit like us we didnt know about till we talked to a local and didnt know u could swim. But it is almost like a dream, this is truly a hidden treasure. I can't walk long distance to hike and see waterfalls and this one was no such a short and easy walk...U will not be disappointed to come out to Blowing Rock there is a ton to do very kid friendly my girls loved it...hoped this helped...
