United States Coast Guard base in Elizabeth City, opened in 1940, is the largest Coast Guard installation in the country. It is home to the following 6 commands: National Strike Force Coordination Center, Base Support Unit Elizabeth City, Aviation Technical Training Center, Air Station Elizabeth City, Station Elizabeth City and the Aviation Logistics Center. Scenes from the motion picture "The Guardian" were filmed at the air station.
