Description

Located on almost 8,500 acres in Anson and Richmond counties, the Refuge supports a broad range of wildlife species, including over 180 bird, 49 amphibian and reptile, 28 mammal, and 20 fish species. The lands are comprised of 3,000 acres of bottomland hardwoods, 1,200 acres of upland pine forest; and 4,300 acres of croplands, old fields, moist soil units and mixed pine hardwoods. In season fishing is available at several Refuge-maintained ponds; and the Refuge has set aside dates to hunt only on Refuge land. A newly-paved Wildlife Drive (a one-way loop road) offers a leisurely drive along the wetlands with stops at Sullivan Pond, a backwater area known for its egret population and a turn-out area to park while taking a short walk through the forest back toward Sullivan Pond.
