With a sum total of 1,160 acres, the Zeke’s Island component of this National Estuarine Research Reserve is comprised of three islands, the Reserve site encompassing 42 acres of high ground on Zeke’s Island, 138 acres of upland on North Island and 3 acres on No Name Island. A small parking lot and boat ramp are maintained by the state Wildlife Resources Commission on the shore of the basin area. The unusual characteristics of the site have created a variety of habitats, including tidal flats, salt marshes, shrub thicket, maritime forest, sand dunes, ocean beach, and the hard surface of the rocks -- each providing for different bird and other wildlife.

There are no trails on Zeke’s Island. The Reserve is accessible primarily by private boat while the barrier spit is accessible by foot or off-road vehicle.
